True North True Blue
I did some crosses with some high anthocyanin tomatoes last summer which is not a type of tomato I have worked with before.
I was given the gift of some extra space this summer at the farm of a friend nearby and so I am able to grow out some of the F2 plants to have a look at them isolated away from my other lines which avoids the risk of cross pollination in my crowded gardens at home . One thing I am looking for is an original antho heart and I do think there may be some candidates. I’ll post any of the “ blue stuff” here so I am starting this thread for later KarenO |

Sounds like a good challenge. I don't recall coming across many antho hearts. Would be a nice addition to your lineup.

Majority of the possibilities for a heart selection are potato leaf.
Many if the seedlings resemble my wispy potato leaf hearts and that is what I’m looking for for that group. A potato leaf high anthocyanin heart. Ideally with at least some? Most? All? Of the flavour of the heart parent ( one of mine) that I used. Time will tell. The other group will be beefsteaks. I do like the look of radial striping in some high antho beefsteaks and so I will expect some of them to display this characteristic and hopefully there will be a bicolour among them. Again, who knows that’s what’s fun about F2, it’s a mystery until you grow them out. I grew about 200 seeds to cull down to what I think may be about 20 antho heart seedlings ( based on colour and wispy form ) for example…. Guessing game but I do know a thing or two about selecting for potato leaf hearts so we shall see how good my guesses are later this summer KarenO Last edited by KarenO; June 7, 2022 at 12:30 AM. |

Most definitely, I would not want to grow this many antho tomatoes in my yard due to the risk of crossing into my non antho breeding lines. Any antho crosses I make I want to be planned and deliberate.
A wonderful opportunity and a gift from my friend to be able to use this space this summer KarenO |

Finally some sun and heat and they are taking off.
A couple of rows of wispy potato leaf dark plants may give an indication of one of my goals: An antho potato leaf heart with some great flavour from one parent - one of my true north potato leaf hearts There are some nice looking droopy plants developing so we shall see. Lots of progress. And several potato leaf anthocyanin hearts to choose from. Some nice early beefsteak tomatoes as well. Looking forward to some colours soon.
