Default Cocoa shells in mix

Has anybody used cocoa shells as part of a potting mix? I read where some people think it is prone to forming mold....when it is used as a mulch. Not sure why that would be....or if that is correct.

They are toxic to pets if that is a consideration for you Ed.

thanks K...I might consider throwing some over the fence to the barking dogs. hehe (kidding). Somebody said it does state about mold on the bags.
