Bonus Beans!

We had a good crop of beans from our Blue Lake pole beans this year--we ate a lot fresh and the freezer is full--but come mid-to-late August the heat and drought and other things to occupy my time (like tomatoes) and the beans got neglected, got big, the plants stopped putting out new beans, the leaves looked ragged--you get the picture. Done for the season.

But we had some rain a few weeks ago and the temperatures moderated a bit and the beans took off again. I picked 8 lbs. on Monday and another 7 lbs today.

And they taste wonderful! They are such a treat. That little break and it's like they're the first beans of the season again.

Some other things in the garden are giving bonus crops as well. The okra is still going (never stopped, just got TALL). The peppers are blossoming again and some have new fruits. I've picked a couple of cantaloupe and there are some "new crop" Blacktail Mountain watermelons that will be ready any day now.

Anyone else have "bonus" crops from their gardens? What are you eating now that you didn't expect to have?

Your beans look great, Ruth!

We had butter beans from the garden Wednesday night. Mine did the same thing. Shut down for a while and started right up again.

My okra sounds like yours. My Dwarf Green Long Pod is not so dwarf anymore. Two of them are about eight feet tall. Another is no more than three feet tall. They all produce though.

My peppers are still doing well. I pick frying peppers and pimentos in batches.

I should have some sweet potatoes coming in soon, I think.

That's about all that's left from my summer garden. From the fall garden, chard and turnips will be ready soon. Everything else is further off.

My garden has had several light freezes, but I have lots still covered...Of the uncovered stuff, I discovered about 8 new patty pan squash and a small watermelon that had somehow ripened lately...My peppers are blooming again, but I know it is in vain....Also picked another 80 # or so of green tomatoes that I had missed from the last picking....Broccoli has had tons of new side shoots to steam, when the deer don't beat me to them...

Oh, I wish I still had my patty pans. The yellow ones are my favorite.

We went camping nearby for two weeks and though I was home for a few minutes most days, I didn't water much and some of my stuff had died when we came back home to stay. So I'm kind of surprised to have any of my summer garden left because it's been so, so dry here.
