There are 4 different types a basalt and about 3 types of lava.
All of them have differing mineral content and are formed in different ways.

It is like saying use flour in a recipe to do something.

Basalt will have a lower silica content than most lava, and starts as a solid rock. Lava is more porous and was flowing on the surface before it cooled and solidified.

Basalt was or is lava at one time it is called basaltic lava.

All lava started out as a rock.

OK, basalt was a lava flow but it is much more solid when a thick flow cools like the giants causway in Ireland. (Google it for nice pictures.) It is much more fluid as a lava than more silaceous flows that cool as scoria.
