dose anyone know the best time to transplant hosta. thank you

I've divided hosta plants in the spring and the fall, when not too hot. They seem to get over the shock faster. That also tends to be the same time that I plant any new introductions of hostas to the garden.

I dig them up and divide them in early spring, when they are just beginning to sprout. They really need this done every 3-4 years or else they become matted together so thickly that it's difficult to separate them.

I have tons of hosta in my yard and I would dare you to try to kill a hosta. You can dig them up, split them, transplant them any time, but spring and fall is best. I prefer spring because I like to get the roots established. Once they make it thru the first year in their new home, they are established and you don't need to worry about them.

I try to divide them before the leaves get full. It makes it much easier to divide them and work with them. So early spring would be the best time.
With that said, I have divided/moved a clump even in the heat of August. It's hard on them, but if you water well, they'll come out of it.
