Reskinning My Hoop House

I am reskinning my 12X18 hoop house. I just finished the inner layer and completed most of the bubble pack that I use as a spacing between the outer layer.

What a beauty of a hoop house. I am building a glass greenhouse in my back yard. Found the wood and the glass in the trash. I thought this is really going to be a nice (cheap) project. After all is said and done, forget the glass and build a hoop house like you did. After buying all the screws, the door, and dont forget the calk, Who Ha, Months later after measuring the pieces like a giant puzzle I will finally have it finished by the end of next week. Next years moto, Go hoop.

That's neat! So you put bubble wrap in between two layers for insulation? what a great idea. Do you also use a form of heat in there?

Thanks lakelady. Yes the bubble wrap keeps the two layers apart making it warmer but more importantly prevently frost from forming on the inner layer. Yes, it is heated by a wood pellet stove. The temperture outside today is around 50F with high winds. The temperture inside is almost 80F, even with though the far door has been open all day and the heater has not been turned on. I do not heat it in the winter. I usually start heating it in late March.

Is there a dead air space between the layers (other than inside the bubbles)? How do you keep the layers from touching each other? Do you use bubblewrap with small bubbles or large bubbles?

In my climate, with nighttime lows in the 40s usually, I've used bubblewrap by itself, wrapped around wire cages, for ad hoc cold frames in the late winter and early spring. But they need to be manually vented on warmer days and secured during wind and rainstorms. I've thought about making something a little more elaborate but haven't gotten around to it.

Yes, there is air space between the two layers. I use the 12 inch small bubbles wrap and fold it in half so that it is 6 inches and double thick, than place it over the hoops.

Oh no. You had such a nice house there.

You've seen the messy houses I have. But you can get plants from me this spring, whatever you want. You know I owe you big time. Just let me know when you need something.

We will most likely be at the May and June St Martin's fair with plants if the weather isn't horrible.

Thank you all for your concern. The fire did not spread to any other buildings but did take out about a dozen 12 foot tall spruce trees that were on the north side of the hoophouse. Building the hoophouse was a labor of love and that is what hurts the most.

Thanks Carol. I should be okay, but I will need some seeds. I plan on starting seedling in my basement and building a new hoophouse. I hope to have the new hoophouse up by early March and I will take a lot of pictures as I am building it.
