Brandywine X Tad (X Anna Russian) - progress (lots of pics)

Very long post - lots of pic links.

I am getting some results on the F3 growouts of the bee produced cross between Brandywine and, possibly, Tad and Anna Russian that eventually led to Lucky Cross and Little Lucky. I've gone back to the F2 seed and grown out a number of F3 - some interesting genetics and segregation at play here.

We all know what Brandywine and Anna Russian look like. Here is Tad (Tad resulted from a cross and subsequent selection between Old German and Tigerella, done by Tad Smith, and was named by Carolyn):



Pic of the original hybrid - very unusual in that it is a pink tomato with fine vertical yellow stripes (never seen a striped hybrid).



I grew 11 of the F2 last year, and then selected the most promising 3 to go to the F3 this year. Here are each of the F2 and the lines that are emerging:

Brandywine hybrid F2 - plant potato leaf 3, saved as 05-63; round medium yellow fruit with fine vertical red stripes. The fruit here is just starting to ripen, but shows the stripes.



From that seed, I grew out three seedlings this year (the F3). Two are potato leaf, one regular leaf.

Here is potato leaf Row 6, plant 6:




Regular leaf Row 7, plant 4 has severe TSW and will not provide any fruit.

Brandywine hybrid F2 - plant potato leaf 5, saved as 05-67; small smooth pink heart shaped.



The F3s are: Potato leaf plant, row 6 plant 5:



And sliced - note that it is completely hollow,

Brandywine hybrid F2 - plant potato leaf 6, saved as 05-69, large yellow/red bicolor, the color of Lucky Cross but not the intense flavor.

Brandywine hybrid F2 - plant regular leaf 5, saved as 05-74; round medium pink fruit with fine vertical yellow stripes. Again, this pic is slightly unripe to show the stripes.

I especially like the look of 05-69 and 05-74...and of course, Tad.

Wow, Tad looks like an awesome tomato. I love the marbling! Did I see at some point that you were not allowed to share seed for Tad?

Fascinating! Out of curiosity, what are the dimensions of your garden? What is the spacing you use? I would assume you don't rotate from year to year? ( ... maybe I am wrong?) If not, do you have any disease/pest problems related to it , & if so, what do you do? I am asking because I have a 25'x50' plot with 100 tomato plants & 90 peppers & 5 different bean varieties - pole & bush. My spacing for toms is 4' rows, 3' between plants & it is CROWDED to say the least. I want to expand the garden & go with 6' rows, 6' between plants next year (it will have to be MUCH larger).

Sorry if this is a hi-jack. I just want to be able to do a few experimental grow-outs next year, as well as all the tried & trues, & first timers, & .... Well, you get the picture! Obviously, it takes alot of space to do all that, esp. judging from all the grow-outs that come from just one or two crosses! Thanks for your help, Craig.

Yes! The infamous TAD! I wonder what happened to that variety?

Little Lucky is another, fabulous tomato that was produced. My favourite!

Tad Smith was trying to breed a certain variety,see link above, and sent some seeds,which were not stable,he had to do that and sent them initially to Craig L but Craig had no room to grow them out so sent the seeds to me since I had lots of room and Tad sent some xsome maps to Craig who then sent them to me when I got involved .

Before I post more I decided to do a Google search,here it is

So you can see who Tad (nickname) was and hopefully still is.I know he moved to the west Coast,CA,(see confirmation of that below) and was with some large CO that bred tomatoes.

Tad would also send hybrids to both of us, they were great,but no way were either of us going to dehybridize them, maybe Tad told us not to share seeds.

I set out 12 plants and wonder of wonders I got what he wanted,saved those seeds and sent some back to both Craig and Tad.

There were a lot of e-mails going back and forth about this as well,thank heavens.

Last I knew I regrew it up here where I am now, saved seeds on a non-coated paper plate and those seeds may still be here.

And I know that Craig also saved seeds as well.

So the only two folks, aside from Tad himself who hopefully still have seeds that might germinate are Craig and myself.

The only thing missing from the way back link is where it said I had named it.If that means naming it for Tad,OK.

Fact is that I set out 12 plants, seeds from Tad and I found what Tad was looking for.

Maybe I'm being picky,but there is a difference between just naming something and being the person who found it IMO.
