Berkley Tie Dye - persistence pays off
Finally, I have success. I made three attempts with BTD and it seems the third time is a charm. I started 5 seeds. Three are up in 7 days. I believe another is trying to poke through. I was over all quite happy with my germination averages on the 40+ varieties I started this year. The BTD, on the other hand, refused to cooperate. I was blessed to have someone offer me seed, not once but twice and I failed to germinate any at all. A third batch arrived in the mail on the 3rd of April. On my third try I made certain not to cover the seed more than 1/16th of an inch. In fact a couple of the seed were still visible. The switch from Jiffy mix to Metromix 360 enabled me to do this. I find that Jiffy mix rolls up and sort of clumps when you try to sprinkle it. The Metromix does not do this.

BTD has been my most stubborn as well Tim, along with NAR, but I too managed to finally get some germination going. I think 5 of a total of 9 have sprung to life. I got no germination out of the first 5, but after spraying with some aspirin water, 2 poked their heads out for me almost a month after the initial sowing.
To make myself sound even more like a parrot.... I have purchased my last bag of Jiffy Mix as well. It just doesn't work well for me as it doesn't seem to accept water real willingly. I figured I had bought a bum bag of the stuff. Even MG Potting Soil works better for me.I looked for Metro this year but couldn't find it readily available at any of my haunts. I'll guess I'll just have to look harder next season. |

here's a link to a photo Mom....
http://www.tomatoville.com/viewtopic.php?t=692 Many of us are growing it for the first time this season, myself included, so I have no personal input on flavor, etc. Rest assured that there will probably be tons of seeds next year, as most of us intend to bag the blossoms for future generations of funky tomato lovers |
