Default Taps and Chinoise Rose Occidentale

Hello from Deer Park Texas!

I thought i'd take a minute to update friends on a couple of new to me varieties I'm growing out this year.

Taps (85 days Ind.) is a very large beautiful pink beefsteek roughly 6" x 4" that weigh in at 20 oz plus or minus an oz or two. They are flawless, don't split and are superb tasting. I've read they are great as an all around tomato and I believe it. We like them in a BLT. The plants are well behaved and I would recommend them. I can't say how long they would last on your counter, my family won't keep their hands off.

Chinoise Rose Occidentale is ditto from above. Actually, they look and taste very much alike. CRO range in size from 10 oz to 20 oz and the plant is a bit larger. They are just beautiful.

More updates coming soon.

Michael

Michael, what leaf form are you getting for Taps?

Yes,there's something behind my question.

Michael... Both varieties sound great! What are the origins of these two? I never heard of them.

Hello Carolyn,

Taps for me is RL. I have read that it can change back and forth from RL to PL.

And where did you read that?

I ask only b'c many years ago I grew Taps and it was true for me that I could not stabilize the leaf form. Seeds saved from PL plants gave both RL and PL and plants and seeds saved from RL plants gave both RL and PL plants. Fruits were the same.

Craig said he thought he had it stabilized.

But at the time I thought I was the only one reporting that and hadn't seen it since thus my asking where you had read that.

I see in the 08 Yearbook that Neil got Taps seeds from me and they were RL and that was back in 1997. I didn't take the time to check the intervening years to see what leaf forms others had gotten.

Carolyn,

Chuck Wyatt---Taps - 80-85 Days, Indet. Pink beefsteaks. Superbly flavored. It changes back and forth between reg. and potato leaf.

I have found other varieties that do the Texas Two Step regarding leaf form, Turk Muts comes to mind.

Yes, now that I think about it yes, Chuck would have known about it b;c I told him about it.

To me a very frustrating experience.

And yes, it is a great tasting variety.
