How long from seed to fruit
I have had one disaster after another this year with starting from seed.
First we arrived to find the house burgled - even the front door stolen. Sprouted some, transferred them to grow. Left them out and we had a scorching day. I couldn't get back so they boiled. Have no facilities in our second house - this is not as grand as it sounds, the first house is three rooms, the second is just a couple of rooms. Grew some in the ground - wild fred was fine but all Andrey's were killed by pests - all but three. Can I start again and get fruit for seed by 15th October? I have no answer regarding your tomato question, because I'm not at all familiar with your climate. But I did want to say I'm sorry about all the trouble you've experienced, and especially the robbery and theft of the front door! What nerve!

I think you would probably be pushing for most varieties except maybe the early varities since most use days to maturity after starting 4-6 weeks indoors so a plant that has a 60 DTM you would have to add on 30-45 days to that. Looks like you would have about 115 days from today so if you have the room and want to give it a shot why not try it.
You would have the benefit of maybe being able to direct sow the seeds which may also speed up the DTM. Just my 2 cents. |

I'd try rooting some suckers. If you don't have enough suckers, You may want to ask a friend, neighbor or fellow tomato lover.

Which ones of Andrey's do you have? There might be some short
season cultivars in there that could bring in a fall crop if started now. What month do you usually depart for Malaysia, and what is the weather like in Bulgaria in September?

Thanks for all the replies. Weather here is around 30 and will get hotter for August. First Sept. it cools considerably to very pleasent.
Thanks Tony, I have plenty of toms, just need to grow some other varieties to fulfill my obligation to send seed! Andrey's: 1.1 Ultra Skorospeli 1.2 Lischka 1.3 Skazka 1.4 Vzryv 2.1 Poliarni Scorospoli 2.2 Podsneznik 2.3 Severianik 2.4 Sabala 3.1 Ali Mustang 3.2 De Baro 3.3 Zolotier Rubka 3.4 Sheznia Kordava I will look on his thread and see what is quick growing, Dice. Thanks for all the advice. |

De Baro is probably De Barao, which is not early, so I would not bother with that one. You might get a couple of fruit in late September to save seeds from, but it is hardly worth the effort for that (De Barao seeds are widely available commercially). It is a good tomato from what I hear, you would have been glad to have them just to eat if nature had not intervened. I would try at least these: 1.1 Ultra Skorospeli 2.1 Poliarni Scorospoli (Skorospelyi means "early" in Russian.) 1.4 Vzryv (Should be earlyish determinate, no more than 70 days.) That's all I could find for the moment in a language that I can read. Depending on how many seeds you have, you could try, say, 2 each of the others, see what happens, and not feel too bad if they get hammered by weather or pests, since you didn't know if they would be early enough to produce fruit anyway.

It was a little misleading saying 'front' door. It was actually at the back of the house. We use the term 'front' door. Here's the pic. and another of the house. The board was what was used to cover the hole from animals that might want to set up home there! It was put up by the man we employ to check once in a while. |
