Question about Tomatoes
Hi everyone,
I saw an article about growing tomatoes and in it, the person claims that they place 2 or 3 Tums in the soil when they plant , and that the tomato plant LOVES the calcium given off from the Tums. Has anyone ever heard of this before? I would like to try it, but wanted some feedback first. Its like placing 2 or 3 matches in with peppers for the sulphur right, might try that one too this year. Thanks for your input everyone. |

I have to say I did actually try that! I was broke and looking at the spray that was supposed to help with blossom end rot. I couldn't afford the spray but did have rolaids. I didn't have a sprayer so I put it on with a spoon and sprinkled it I didn't have nay more BER on those 2 plants. Did it work? I really don't know, but I do know that it did not hurt them! Except when I saw this powery whitish stuff on them I panicked until I remembered that that was the plant i "treated"

Oh really, thats good to know.
I thought it sounded like a good idea, but wanted to know of anyone else has done this. So you ground your's up then and added to the soil?? |

I put it directly on the plant. My soil was already too alkaline so I was worried about adding in something that might make it more so.

I use matches for my plants to because what I've read said it was for the phosphorus the second number in the fertilizer rating like ( 10-10-10)

Penny, if you Search on "BER" you will find a number of discussions on blossom end rot and calcium. (Hint: the calcium tablets will do your body more good than the tomato plant. But don't eat the match heads.)
