Aunt Ginny V BS
I haven't grown Aunt Ginnys Purple and am wondering how it compares with Brandywine Suddeth in regards to taste , size and productivity for those who have grown both.
I love these big pink beefstake types and think I am going to plant quite a few different varieties of them this year. thanks Mantis |

mantis,
AGP is my favorite tomato for flavor. I can get tomatoes from this variety, whereas I've failed to get any ripe Brandywine tomatoes in my garden. The production is not great for AGP...I get anywhere from 10 to 20 (I would probably get more if my growing conditions were better), depending on weather, but the flavor makes it worth it. These are large beefsteak type with a lot of juice and need a long growing season.

I've grown both many times, with great success and with moderate yields, as I indicated in my book. But I still find Brandywine (Sudduth) to have a unique taste, for me, that is not duplicated by any other variety, and that includes Aunt Ginny's Purple, which is very tasty, but just not the same as Brandywine(Sudduth).
The larger question is what production and taste are like for large pink PL's where you garden since so many of the PL's don't set well in prolonged hot weather.

I start my plants very early here as we get mild winters and I have a greenhouse. I will be sowing some this weekend with the idea of planting them in the greenhouse on the winter solstice in June.
I have grown Brandwine Suddeths the last two years and have gotten about 20 - 25 fruit per plant each time. Soldacki last season was even better, production wise. I am also going to try Stump of the World and Prudens Purple in the greenhouse . I had a Prudens Purple last year but outside, and it kept on producing tomatoes for months after the other outside plants had stopped. Really looking forward to seeing how it goes in the greenhouse. Thanks for the feedback Mantis |

Oh, and another thing. Brandwine gives off a lot of pollen when the flowers are tapped gently. I think this is because they are in the greenhouse and therefore a more sheltered environment. So I tap out pollen onto pinkie and dap it onto waiting ready flowers around the greenhouse.

Based on limited votes from :http://www.tomatoindex.com/index.cfm?pgaction=topVotes
Brandywine rates a 4.5 out of 5 Aunt Ginny Rates a 4.1 out of 5 So they seem pretty close in flavor.

Here is some Aunt Ginny shots from my season just gone by. Got LOTS of very big tomatoes--nice flavor--did not knock anybodies socks off but it was a brand new bed and not amended very much so not much K (potassium)--the flavor was good but not great but maybe adversely effected by growing conditions. Will grow again next year. Good luck with yours.
