Default Saljut vs Black Plum

I've grown Black Plum for several years and it is actually a fav of mine. Very productive and nice typical 'pink' mild taste tho darker in color.

Last year I got many varieties as trades that I didn't know a whole lot about. Saljut was one of them. They were grown in a different part of the field from my Black Plums so I didn't realize at first that they WEREN'T the Black Plums (the tag was hard to see).

In looking for info here, all I could find was that they were a 'plum' with varying colors mentioned. Saljut isn't listed in SSE or Tatiana's. My Saljut were all quite the same size and shape and color - brownish. No variations at all that I could see. They were at least a week earlier than the Black Plum, but the Black Plums were planted at least that much later than the Saljut so that may not be a true fact.

I'm wondering if they are actually the same tomato with a foreign name or not.

I didn't get a chance to really compare them since we had such a hard time getting ripe tomatoes last year and I don't think were had both at the same time. I will grow them both near each other this year so see if there is a varietion or not.

Thanks,
Carol

Carol,

Actually Saljut was the name of the Russian commecial tomato seed package with different tomato varieties of different colors with plum shape I had. In 2002-2004 I used to add some seeds from this packed as extra to many seed trades I had with people from GW.
This is not a name for one particular variety but the name of a mixed package with seeds of plum shaped tomato varieties unknown for me distributed by Russian seed company NC Seeds.

Funny how tomatoes already having an established name get renamed. This instance is particulary interesting. Kind of like if one (or more) type from Long Island Seed Project's Dwarf Champion Mix were to end up being distributed down the line as Dwarf Champion. Though in the case of the dwarf mix, if someone were careful to read, Ken Ettlinger did at least assign some names for the types you can expect to find in his mix.

Ah, interesting Andrey, but I didn't get the seeds from you.

But the person I got them from may have gotten them from you and then only saved 1 kind, the brown plums.

Yah, I hate it when some of the companies like Burpees and others offer a "mix" and what you get is just a pack of mixed up seeds. I wonder if the varieties they SAY are in there really ARE. How would anyone know or be able to complain. A good way to pawn off cheaper seeds.

When I offer a mix, it's maybe 5 varieties, all in their own LABELED packs, so at least people know what they are growing and then can re-order their favs from the bunch.
