I avoid DEET entirely - greasy nastiness that makes me feel weird. However I really like the picaridin (non greasy new formula in OFF & others) - works very well here for ticks, biting gnats, mosquitoes & horse flies (we got 'em all here in spades).

Tom - believe y'all are blessed with babesiosis to contend with from those Ixodes ticks as well. Of course, we have erlichiosis in addition to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, less so with the Lyme disease. NC has the highest infection & death rates from RMSF in the country. Around here symptoms of "summer flu" - fever, chills, swollen glands, myalgias - get thee to a physician post haste. Hopefully they have not just moved here & know to jump on treatment.

You want to give picaridin a try if you ever opt to venture out.
