Default Is Jack be little edible.

It's approaching winter down here in NZ so browsing some seed catalogues. After a poor pumpkin and winter squash season I have decided for next season to try a range of miniatures.
Mainly miniature hybrids and possibly Jack be Little and Wee be Little however one of the catalogues says in bold lettering...
Not Recommended for eating!...Is this correct?
I presume Sweet Dumpling and Hooligan are ok. Lucky fellas..summer on the way and we down here shiver.

Yes, Jack be little is edible and so as Wee be little, but they are not exactly palatable nor have lots of flesh.

Edible...yes.

Eatable...maybe.

Wee is very bland. BabyBoo, on the other hand is very sweet...but very pale. The others fall somewhere in between. Chickens and pigs don't seem to mind any of them.

Have you tried Red Kuri/ Uchiki Kuri or Red Hokkaido ? The fruit is fairly small (0.5 to 1.5kg), the vine matures early and pretty productive. The fruit stores well and the taste is yummm.

I recomend you a nice bush variety called Golden nugget. I like it very much! Small and excellent fruits (especially eaten raw). My favourite variety is Delicata - raw is very good, the vines are short, but the fruits aren't tiny as Jack be little or Baby boo (both are best when picked young, when you can eat them with the skin and seeds). Sweet dumpling is nice too.

I like to eat many vegetables raw, including corn, but I haven't tried raw winter squash. How do you eat it? In chunks, grated? As a side vegetable, or in salads?

You can make chunks and eat is like that. You can also grate it in the salad (with other vegetables). When the squash is (too) big to be eaten in some days I just put it in the juicer and make fresh squash juice (you can mix it with apple, carrot juice). No, it's not yuk at all.
