Village Farms Tomatoes
Anybody have any idea what these tomatoes are? Hybrid or OP? Determinate or indeterminate?
My parents like them and thought I might grow out some seeds for them - just wanted to know what to expect. http://www.villagefarms.com/ProduceV...OnTheVine.aspx In the grocery, they are #4664. |

Chucker,
Can't "argue" with your parents, but these are hydroponic tomatoes grown on a massive scale. These mega-growhouses are popping up all over in the U.S. and Canada. Lot's of questions regarding the longterm financial viability and R.O.I. on the investment side, but that is a topic for another discussion. While tasting better than tomatoes "On-The-Vine" picked green and shipped for days from Mexico, I am sure these have better flavor - but they still are hydroponic tomatoes!! I am sure this variety is bred for thicker walls and longer transport and store shelf life - - not for flavor. Also, these certainly are Hybrids, so saving seed and trying to replicate in the home garden will not be very successful. Raybo |
