What size is Simpson's Summer Palace?

What size should Simpson Summer Palace be? Mine all are about 1 ½ to 2 inches across and seem to be finished expanding, waiting to color up. I guess my confusion is from the tale I’ve read; they were from seeds of a tomato someone dropped from a slice on their sandwich. I was expecting maybe 4” to beefsteak size but they could certainly have been smaller.

BTW, which is correct? Searches turn up all 3 (but nothing on size).

The story goes that someone at the Russian Czar's summer palace dropped seeds from their tomato sandwich (maybe) and the plants were found on the grounds there. The seed company, Simpson's, released it hence Simpson's Summer Palace. I believe it's a saladette size. Roscoe sent me seeds and a photo and they look round and red. I have 3 growing at the moment with green fruit weeks away from ripe and am looking forward to it.

I have grown simpsons summer palace off and on since they were first offered by simpsons,

And judging from the photos etc, everything looks about right in every respect,

I would rate it as a good allrounder with fairly good taste value, and easy to grow.

It grows very simular to another one I grow -called (Victory) from an island off russia, simular in size and plant growth, a bit more vigorous but the taste is different on Victory leaning towards a slight lemony citrus taste -very refreshing and nice,

I'm in big doubt they eat sandwiches with tomatoes. It is still not in our traditions to cut tomatoes lengthways. We prefer to cut the fruit on pieces for salad or fill hollow tomatoes with something delicious or eat them whole :wink:
