So, is it true that once the flowering begins the vertical growth of the tomato slows down and if so, would it be wise to remove early flowers so that the length of the plant is greater. Does the increased height result in an increase in flowers?

If the conditions you're growing in are very good (rich soil, good temperature), I'd say this will just lose you some early fruits. If things are less than ideal, the plant will try to first grow those few tomatoes and the plant will be stunted. Still, if at transplant time you have small tomatoes or flowers on a very small plant, it's better to cut them off.
