Soldacki

First time growing this variety... picked it up from local nursery unlike most that I grow from seed. Variety is a potato leaf and grows very nice large looking fruit. That's where it ends as the fruit is very bland to me.

I have other varieties growing beside it that taste great.

I have seen mention that this variety was comparable to Brandywine.. no way in my book. Has anyone else have differing opinions? Maybe I got a bad plant or crossed.

I like it better than Brandywine, possibly. It was very sweet for me. I don't think that you can easily compare varieties to Brandywine because it has a bit of an unusual flavor, so it comes down to personal flavor preference. About the only thing that reminded me of Brandywine flavor was Prue.

Then I must have gotten a bad plant. Would like to grow it from seed myself, anyone have any extra Soldacki seed that I could give it a shot next year?

Only would need 2-3 seeds.

I've grown Soldacki from time to time since I got the original seeds from Carm Artino and it's never been bland and I wouldn't compare it to Brandywine at all, for the reasons TZ just noted.

But it does have a great taste and is very productive for a large fruited variety.

I can't say that you had a bad plant just b'c you thought the taste was bland b'c there are so many variables that are associated with the development of taste. Yes, Iknow, you did say that your other ones tasted great.

If I had fresh seeds I'd offer them to you but I don't, otherwise, I think it would be a good idea if you posted in the Seed Forum Wanted and asked for seeds there rather than relying on a seed request in any specific thread.

I think Soldacki has great flavor. Never bland, here.

However, it is very prone to cracking,...it exhibits more cracks than a plumbers convention. It's the only variety I've trailed that frequently has radial and concentric cracking on the same fruit.

I would definitely say Soldacki is not bland. I consider it more flavorful than many tomatoes. Did you only have one fruit so far? I ask because often the first fruit does not taste right. This doesn't happen all the time, but enough that I don't pass judgement until trying another. If you've had a few then someithng is amiss.

Has anyone tried to grow Soldacki in a SWC to try and control the cracking problem? I'm thinking of trying that next year.

There are many heirloom varieties that can show radial or concentric cracking and Soldacki can and does show concentric splitting and both raidal and concentric splitting are genetic in nature, so growing it any other way is not going to lessen that genetic trait.

Almost all of the heirloom varieties I've grown, several thousands, are prone to those problems.

It is an interesting idea, though, reduced cracking from a consistent,
always there water supply. rnewste could test it with his Earthtainer
automatic watering system, too.
