Heartfelt thanks to feldon30 and creister
For reasons too complicated to explain, I had to put my tomatoes in the ground on March 27 even though we can get frost here as late as June 10. Feldon30 and creister gave me great advice about managing tomatoes in cages wrapped with row cover. My plants survived not only several frosts but also our usual spring windstorms of 50 m.p.h. and up. Better yet, I have been picking salad tomatoes (Stupice) since June 7, which is unheard of for this location (high desert in easternmost California; USDA Zone 8a, Sunset Zone 10). Should have ripe beefsteaks by the end of the month or a little later. I think I’ll try for an early start every year, with tomato plants in walls of water during April, then in row-covered cages in May and early June. Thanks, guys.

Well hey I'm glad the advice worked out.
I don't even know when I will have a garden again but glad I can have some contribution.
