I got the Topaz last year in a trade. It grew fine in a hard growing year for us. I had too many new-to-me varieties last year to remember how that one tasted. But for production it must have been good because we collected a whole lot of seeds.

I've grown Huang Se Chieh and am doing so again this year. It's very productive and vigorous. Pretty too. I wouldn't rate the taste as excellent, but it's certainly good. More to the tart and juicy side with light sweetness.

I have seeds directly from China for a large, pink tomato, but there is no variety name on the packet. Just a lot of Chinese writing that translates as the company name and planting instructions, etc. The tomato was very productive, juicy, thin skinned and sweet. The vine was not determinate, but was very compact, yet required staking. The tomatoes went about 8 ounces globes, and set four to a cluster. The people who brought the seeds back from China said they usually get larger than that and indicated the size of softball. Maybe they use lots more manure in China! The packet was chock full of seeds, so I assume it was an open pollinated variety.

I've got Peiping Chieh growing. This is a picture of a clone I made, therefore it's not as big as the two at the farm. I just planted this a few days ago at the Church Community Garden.
Here is one from the farm: Last edited by WillysWoodPile; July 1, 2011 at 01:02 AM. Reason: add picture |
