What if PL Tomato x RL Tomato...
I had this little salad tomato show up last year and at the very end of the season I decided to save seed from it, knowing that there was no way that it was Lescana Heart and probably just a stray seed. Since this little mostly yellow but faint striped mini heart or strawberry shape tomato had given so many tomatoes all season long, I should try it again.
So looking back through my notes, this is a possiblity if a cross would work that way and I am doubting it will but no idea what it might be.... 2009 Lescana Heart planted next to Large Pink Bulgarian Heart PL. ... 2010 planted seed from the 2009 Lescana Heart, One was right and one was the yellow striped strawberry heart. 2011, I have one plant of Lescana Heart from the orginial source and one plant from the new little tomato. This year there is no sign of stripes at least yet, not heart or strawberry shaped but more bullet shaped and they are Potato Leaf looking. I did not notice the leaf shape last year. My question can a red RL Heart cross with a pink PL Heart and come up with a yellow unstable PL?? No chance it's a cross??? Last edited by patty_b; July 21, 2011 at 12:19 PM. |

PL X RL will give RL in the F1 as RL is dominant you will not start to see PL plants until the F2 generation.

That would explain the leaf being RL last year.. now can a Red x Pink = a yellow in F1 and F2??

Not sure about in the F2 but not in the F1 as red is dominant so the F1's would all be red.

Let's use the Dwarf project cross results for color to see what could happen....
the times we had bicolor F1s are with Jaunty and Dizzy - both were Dwarf Russian Swirl (a bicolor) X Lucky Cross (though used different selections of Dwarf Russian Swirl I think). Vince has seen stripes in an F1 in Beauty (Dwarf Wild Fred X Beauty King). Messy F1 was also striped (Dwarf Wild Fred X Pink Berkeley Tie Die). And Quirky had faint stripes, as did Streaky - both of them used stripes for the F1. So stripes seem to be dominant, but red is always dominant to other colors....actually it may be a good idea if I went through all of the dwarf crosses and gathered together the colors used for the cross and the color of the F1. A few surprises have popped up in the project - such as purples coming out of Sleepy (which was a red X pink), and the F1 of Tipsy being red (crossing a yellow with an orange!). Recessive genes can mess up some of the predictions!

Only if one or both of the parents has a dominate striping trait. An example would be Red lightning F1 from burpee seeds it is a Red with yellow stripes that has Red Zebra as one of the parents. Still though the dominate color is red and the stripe is yellow.
If you mean yellow with red stripes from a red parent in the F1 hybrid then I think the answer would still be no as red is dominate. I in F2 and further generations then yes that is possible. Think me and Craig posted at the same time but are both saying that red is the dominate and only another dominate trait like Striping etc will effect that but the main coloring should still be red with a red parent

Ok.. one more question.. what if my Lescana heart was not red but pink, would that make a difference. I know I am grasping at straws, but just can't see how this came about. I took photos last summer but all pics were lost when my external hard drive locked up..really wish I could look at them one more time!!

If the red Lescana heart was actually unstable, an F1 from the year
before that looked a lot like the true Lescana heart, then recessives like PL leaves showing up when it crossed with a PL pink are possible. (If the Lescana was actually from a Lescana x unknown seed, and if the unknown was PL or itself an F1 with a PL parent or grandparent, a PL could show up when Lescana x unknown was crossed with a PL pink heart.) If the Lescana was a stable OP red plant, then any F1 should have been red, too.
