old german-no flowers

I've grown this one before - not a heavy setter but this year - there are zero flowers or even buds. More heat than usual this summer but at least we have had rain. This is a Chef Jeff plant so I don't think the tag could have been switched - those little tags are really in there - but the plant really doesn't look like past plants. Healthy, five footer, I have tried shaking it really hard and trimmed some leaves off in an effort to shock her into action. Anyone else having a problem? Piegirl

Hi, Piegirl. I'm growing OG with seeds from TGS and have no problems except was a little later than I had hoped.

If the plant is 5 ft tall, and tallness Carolyn doesn't ken, LOL, and NO buds at all, let alone blossoms, then it seems to me, since there are no BUDS that a couple of things could have happened.

Over fertilization can inhibit the sexual cycle of bud and blossom and fruit set.

Or, could it be that you have what I call a "mule", that is, a plant that will never go into the sexual cycle b'c of an unexpected mutation somewhere. Such mule plants are usually bigger and more lush than the same variety being grown in the same place.

I could look out at Charlie's fields and spot the mule plants ASAP b/c of that.

Of the thousands of plants I've grown I've only grown one mule plant, that is that I can remember, and that was Limmony and next to it was a Limmony that was just fine.

In what way does this plant not resemble OG that you've grown before?

Well the foliage is really more delicate than I remember - the entire leaves are just smaller and the plant is rather narrow if that makes sense rather big and kinda bushy. I don't think it is over fertilized since I used homemade compost when I planted and a sprinkling of slow release tom fert in late June. It just seemed very slow to take off and while tall, it is still not doing anything. I think I will give it another week and then put it to rest. Piegirl
