Should I Share Seed Or Not???
Ok , A little while ago I posted about what I believed to be Purple Prince/Price but it turns out it most likely was Black Prince and was misnamed. Now my question is rather simple. Should I be sharing seed of it and if so under the name Black Prince or under the name "Purple Prince Misnamed". I do not want to add to the confusion of misnamed items but I also do want others to be able try it if they so desired. Adivce Please! Thanks
( I do plan to grow it again myself as it really has produced more for me then any other variety I am growing) Original Thread http://www.tomatoville.com/viewtopic.php?t=2283 P.S. I started a new thread just to make sure It was not passed over by users who posted in it previously as I would really like their opinions. |

I would offer it if it is a fantastic tasting, productive tomato worth trialing by others around the country/world.

I do not share seed because I am horribly disorganized and am concerned that I would be spreading about that disorganization. It seems to me that your slight confusion on this matter could be easily explained in the process of sharing. Therefore, as long as you are up front about the name issue, I would say go ahead.

I'd say, if you like it and think others will, then by all means, share it, but make sure you share it as something like:
NOT Purple Prince The Tomato Formerly Known as Purple Prince 8) ... Then again, there's always this: - Eric |

If you feel that this is a variety that other people might like for one reason or another, I think it would be fine to list it with a brief explanation of the mixup. In fact, maybe you could even include a link to the original discussion as you did here. I personally wouldn't be bothered by the mystery if the tomato itself sounded like a variety my family would enjoy. Who knows; maybe someone familiar with Black Prince would be interested in growing your variety to do a side-by-side comparison.
As for what you might call it in a trade listing...I suppose anything referencing 'not Purple Price' or 'possible Black Prince' would suffice as long as it was followed by a brief mention of the mixup. |

especially if you've ended up with a Black Prince that doesn't succumb to every tomato disease under the sun.

Thank you everyone for posting. I think I will list it as Purple Prince ( Misnamed & Possibly Black Prince ) when/if I trade or SASE it away this fall.
Feldon - Now that you mention disease I should add that this confused mater is my only Tomato that hasn't had one single yellow leaf or any sign of a foliage disease. It is now 6 feet tall and still very productive. The taste has improved a lot with the newer fruits but the size has also shrunk. I had a tiny bit of foliage disease on all ( but this one ) my Tomatoes about 3 weeks ago and removed all the bad leaves and haven't had much since ( Except on a Ponderosa ).This Black Prince/Purple Prince Misnamed though was the only plant of the 14 not to have anything at all wrong with it. I havent had anything die of any disease though and only experienced a bit of foliage disease so I can't say it's really disease tolerant for sure but it was interesting. It is though my largest by a foot and my most productive by quite a bit with only a Hybrid Miracle Sweet giving it a fight. Sirtanon - I should have known my tomato was just trying to get out of his contractual obligations! hehe Landarc - I am almost OCD about organization so unfortunately I have other issues when it comes to organization. That being said my blossom baggies keep coming undone so yea who knows what mutant I might pass out this fall. pooklette - Yea if I didnt have space limits I would be curious enough to grow a Black Prince beside it next year but right now I already have way too many wants and not enough space! |

Personally, I would mark it something like this if sharing: NOT Purple Price (may be Black Prince). |

Suze , Thank you for the adivce but just to be clear the variety was purchased at a local nursery here and was named Purple Prince. I looked Purple Prince up on davesgarden.com and was lead to believe it was Purple Price. This is why the original thread I linked to was titled Purple Price/Prince. I posted about how wonderful this tomato had been for me with pictures and was informed by Craig, Carolyn and a few others that what I had was not Purple Price and Craig went so far as to explain to me in great detail why he believed it to be Black Prince. This is why I have dropped Purple Price from the name completely as it was only me who added it when I looked up Purple Prince. I hope that clarifies things.
I do actually though prefer your naming to my own and may use Misnamed Black ( May be Black Prince ) |

Ok. I think I understand what you are saying. I think I will drop Price/Prince completely as it clearly isnt a Purple Price and there is no such seperate Purple Prince so I think Misnamed Black is more appropriate. Do you think this is better or do you think including Purple Price is important in case it was a cross?

Hehe We edit our posts so quickly that people are going to start thinking this conversation has somehow fractured the space/time continuum.
