Do you have a restaurant, or is it necessary to have 100% uniformity in your home sliced tomatoes?

I have a carbon steel chefs knife that is 30 years old and I get perfect slices every time.
Paper thin to thick. It is razor sharp. I despise stainless steel knives, even the Japanese use carbon steel for sushi. Worth |

I get satisfactory slices of everything I slice without gimmicks that take up space in kitchen drawers or require washing a sink full of gadgets after every BLT sandwich or chef salad.

My wife came home with a mushroom slicer and broke it the first try. It now resides in the local land fill. Worth |

Mudman, very nice that someone went to the time and trouble to find something tomato related to gift to you. I hope you enjoy many many tomato sandwiches with uniform slices!

He or she who dies with the most tomato toys, wins.
Most folks haven't tried one of those things. My DW has some problems with holding on to things with her arthritic hands. She cut herself several times slicing veggies. Finally, I bought her one of those slicing guides, similar to the one shown, and solved the problem. Like Worth, I have a special knife that I use on tomatoes and some other veggies, but my knife would not fit the hands of everybody else. It's a good knife, and it fits me well. And, I'll bet, that Worth's knife fits his hand well. The slicing guide will fit a lot of hands well for those folks who are "thin slices" or "even thickness" tomato slicing challenged. I mean, even a clock that has stopped is right twice a day.

I have not had a chance to try it yet but I might just buy a tomato next time I go to the store. Then I can cut it up and throw it in the garbage. I'm not really into the gimmicks either, but I am thankful for considering a gift related to tomatoes for me.

I will get one for my wife. The reason...............she cant use a knife worth a hoot. She even eats steak like a child and has never learned to cut up a steak. It drives me nuts. I can perfectly slice pounds of potatoes into fries in a matter of minutes where it takes her 10 minutes to just get ready. And then butcher the poor thing. Its as though she doesn't have opposing thumbs. So yes I saw one of these contraptions and I will buy it. Will I use it? No. Will she? Yes. Thank you Ted for putting things in perspective. Worth |
