Default CAROLYN, how does your garden grow?

Just wondering how things are going, Carolyn - how you and your plants are fairing. Is someone taking care of them for you? Have you got ripe ones? Are you going through withdrawal???

Kim,

My tomtoes are absolutely lousy this year. And that reminds me that Martha sent me a PM and asked the same question, so I'll just PM her and ask her to read here.

They were put out in time, by no less than Mischka when he was here in late May and my hopes were great.

Two problems.

First, at one end of the raised bed the plants today look almost like they did when they were put out and I'm not sure why b'c that wasn't the case last year. Freda did dump all the compost in the pots there and hauled in some of my top soil to mix with it b'c the pots with just compost that my brother had done dried out too quickly. So whether it has something to do with that, I don't know, but what is, is.

The plants further down in the bed are doing OK but the combo of heavy rain then blistering heat has not been good. The four in pots look pretty good, so far, but nothing ripe.

Karen waters when she's here on Sundays but inbetween only a couple of times has Freda come by when she was either power washing the deck or cutting the lawn.

My take so far, as brought in by Karen.

Six Sungolds
One misshapen AWV
And on Sunday, one gorgeous looking either Omars or Tidwell German and a truss of Kimberly.

i can see some greenies out there and i still have hopes.

But that recent week of high heat and high humidity I'm sure did a number on them.

I am getting a fair amount of summer squash and cukes, though. And I have the mini cukes in pots and Karen was supposed to sow seeds for the long Armenian ones at the other end of the rasied bed but goofed and sowed seed for Sunburst, a yellow squash I love, but there are six plants out there at that end and they are HUGE.

Sorry to hear about your disappointing season, but there is still hope! Hopefully we will have a late frost.

I can imagine it is frustrating, knowing what you would do to take care of your plants, vs. someone else doing it - no matter how hard they try it is just not the same. (I worry when I have to ask my husband to do the odd gardening chore that I am unable to get to because of work, etc. )

We have had the same heat & humidity last week ... brutal. The plants faired well, though, although I did notice that Reisentraube did suffer with alot of blossoms failing to set.

I have tons of greenies, 8 or 10 varieties FINALLY starting to have the first toms ripen up, and am hopeful for what comes over the next 6 to 8 weeks.

(P.S. - Labour day weekend Sep 1 to 4th, I will be coming to upstate NY to Watkins Glen race track (near Corning). If you are anywhere near there, I could smuggle some ripe ones over the border & drop them off!! )
