Interesting Development

I had saved some tomato seeds and after their last rinse down, I forgot them in the cup. A week later, they decided to germinate anyway, even under an inch of chlorinated water. Got to love a tomato seed.

I know.

I do my seed processing out in the barn in a large sink that drains directly into the old "gutter" from the dairy barn. There is dirt from years of washing vegies in the gutter.

Often in spring, there will be tons of seedlings there from the stuff washed down the drain. The seeds that floated and should have been too immature to be "good" seed.

Got to love a tomato seed alright.A few days ago i picked a ripe dwarf Wherokowhai,scarped out a few seeds straight into some screened compost,few days later up they come.

It's amazing the will to live a tomato seed has... A plant too, for that matter. Once I had to throw away a tomato transplant because I accidentally broke the top off the tomato. I put it in the compost bin and a week later it was growing in the compost!

They are still growing in the cup. I think I'll pour them out onto a 4 inch pots of soil and lightly cover just to see what happens.

Decided to document before placing in the soil. Here they are today, water is down to 1/4 inch. Looks like we have nearly 100 percent germination and some are standing up opening the their seed leaves.

Putting them in seed starting mix at that point was total failure. 100% loss.
