Does plant type indicate fruit type?

Cloz sent me some Captain Lucky seed of which I have germinated six (actually five) seed. The resulting seedlings have one PL and four RL seedlings. One of the four RL seedlings has wispy foliage which seems more true to type for heart shaped fruit. The Captain Lucky variety normally has regular RL foliage instead of the wispy foliage according to Cloz. By planting the RL plants instead of the PL or RL wispy, will the probability of obtaining typical Captain Lucky F2 fruit be higher?

Cloz and I agree the probability of cross pollination is greater than mixed seed resulting in the mixed seedlings. His results with the seed batch have been very similar to mine. He noticed the variations first and then asked me if I noticed the same thing with the seed he sent me.

I think the first thing to do is to read the following thread about Catain Lucky b'c unfortunately winterfly sent out some crossed seed, he's the originator, and depending on when cloz got the seeds that might well explain what's going on.

But in general, no, plant type, whether indet or det or PL or RL does not determine fruit type if you mean fruit color, shape, size, etc.

True, but in the case of hearts I think wispy leafs is a good indicator of fruit shape to follow. Not always but it has been indicative of heart shape varieties in my experience. Ami

As I said ami, in general, b'c while most heart varieties do have wispy droopy foliage, some don't.

Since I've also found that the viability of seed for most heart varieties is not as long as with non-heart varieties, and I know that Darrel has found the same, some year I'd like to have someone start a comparison between wispy/droopy and non-wispy/droopy hearts to see if there's any genetic linkage with seed viability.

I should live so long to check viability for many years, ahem, which is why I'm suggesting someone else do it, b'c I no longer have the room to do it anyway.

Tedln - The 'real' Captain Lucky is PL bearing green/yellow/pink medium-large tricolor fruit. This aspect may have been discussed in the thread Carolyn mentioned.

Captain Lucky has several sister lines. The Captain Lucky I grew (2 vines so far) has potato leaf (PL) shapes exclussively. While I have seeds for a few other sister lines, I have not yet sprouted them and cannot say what leaf types they express. However, that you are getting PL, RL, and wispy from the same seed batch would indicate unstable seeds to me.
