That is the right way to do it, though, with a granular fertilizer where
everything in it is water soluble and available to the plant as soon at
it gets wet. Watering or rain will wash it in.

The performance depends somewhat on what type of soil you have.
In a clay loam soil, with plenty of clay, fertilizers leach out of it fairly
slowly, and soluble fertilizers will be available to the roots for longer
than they would be in sandy loam or container mix, given the same
amount of rainfall or irrigation.
