I don't necessarily find bi-color tomatoes to be bland. I grew one quite by accident one year. It was supposed to be BW OTV. It was very good, one of the best tasting varieties I had that year, and it was a fairly rainy summer that year. I just hate that I have no idea which one I grew. It was PL, whatever it was.

Did you get to try the Berkley Tie Die (I think that's right) at Tomatopalooza? I thought it had a good flavor. I think the bi-colors can vary a lot according to environmental conditions, but the ones I've tried, I've liked a lot. They did not strike me as bland - doesn't mean they can't be at times though.

The first fruit from this cross tasted good
(fruit developement during high heat)

The next couple tasted just ok
(fruit developement during heavy rains)

Either way, its the same tomato off the same plant.
But in my opinion the stresses had different effects on their flavor ~

I know genes, is genes - but could environmental
conditions be a contributing factor to flavor in all tomatoes not just bi-colors ?

Oh, I think environment plays a strong role in flavor, and I think some varieties are more susceptible to environmental conditions than others.

On the first one, we'd have to ask Gary Ibsen.

On this one, I could try e-mailing Be Wise Ranch in San Diego where these incredible heirloom tomatoes are coming from:

.

The taste of both was top-notch. If they weren't $3.99 a pound, I wouldn't put so much effort in my garden.

Are some bi-colors considered to be tastier (in the eye of the beholder) than some yellows ?

Heh, yes.

Some bicolors are better than some yellows to some people.
But you knew that already.

No, this post contains no useful information.
