Santa Ana potato variety
Santa Ana, a variety from Peru is going to be represented more frequently in my potato breeding efforts. It is a beautiful violet skinned potato that yield well for me. It seemed to have good storability left in the ground all winter and though it has a short dormancy it acted as a long dormancy potato in our cool climate here north of Seattle. The tubers seemed resistant to freezing damge and the yields are outstanding.
I am featuring some of the potatoes that I make crosses to and hope to make some of the obscure Peruvian potatoes more ubiquitous. Santa Ana has been around for 35 years, but maybe I can supply TPS from the crosses I make. The first picture below is one in my field. The second shows the color of the tubers. No late blight injury on this clone for years now. |
