I checked out my DCP plants a couple of days ago because Tracy got her seeds from me.

I would also weigh in on the side of "environmental" being the cause of the odd shaped fruit.

I saw some larger than normal fruit on my plants, tho not quite to the point of "mini-beefs" but definitely larger and wider. Those were all on first set clusters and later clusters had normal shaped fruit.

Our weather here when we planted out was cool to cold. While in the greenhouse the weather was cold and lots of grey so growing was slow. Then we got hot weather with spotty rain.

Tracy got a lot more rain than I did even tho we aren't very far away from each other. She also warms up a couple of weeks before I do just because I get the afternoon wind off cold Lake Michigan in the spring.

I also had another variety that looked a bit "off-type" to someone that bought the seeds from me. That too looked to me like it was just a water issue where the fruit weren't as "plump" as expected. Mine that set while we were very dry were slimmer too. But those set during a week when we got drenched seem to be more plump.

Weather can be a bigger factor in what we get than we sometimes realize.

It's the post done by Mulio yesterday which explains why fruits for a specific variety on the same plant can have different shaped fruits especially early in the season.

Mulio is Keith M. and you may know him b'c of the varieties he's bred such as Purple Haze F1, Dora, Bear Creek, Liz Birt and Gary O Sena and at his website he describes what else he's working on.

He talks about catfacing as well but I think almost everyone here already knows about catfacing and what causes it.

I know I learned something new and I hope that it intersts some of the rest of you.
I found a picture that illustrates this point. All three fruits on the same truss have different shape -and I am sure this is not a mutation!

This plant was really fun - what variety. I had quite a few mini-beefsteaks, plus some large cherries. At the same time. Both were delicious.

Interesting, this year for an experiment, I planted two Dr. Carolyn Pink plants right next to each other (in the ground) - one from Carol, one from Tania.

Conditions were identical, but the ones from Carol did produce larger fruit - just about the size of Juanne Flammee. Tania's were smaller. Both were good, but they do taste a bit different.

I'll have to get a photo.

Tam, the ones on the right are about the right size and I had to read this whole thread again to see where things were at.

I've repatedly said here at Tville as well in my former SSE listing for it that it's the smaller one, the size of Dr. Carolyn, that has the best taste IMO.

Again, I've never seen anything other than round cherries for Dr. Carolyn Pink, no oblate ones, no beefsteaks ones, no nothing elseones.

And I think I also said that I stopped SSE listing it b'c I was frustrated at not being able to get a pure line of the smaller vs the larger cherries.

So go with the smaller one Tam, save the seeds from both large and small and then plant them again and step back and find that seeds from small ones will give you both sizes and seeds from the larger ones will do the same.

At this point I have no idea if anyone has REALLY stabilized the smaller fruited one, I know I couldn't do it.

And the bit about the large one all started when I had two plants out and it was a very rainy season and both plants had very large pink fruits.

Carolyn, do you want any of these seeds? Especially the small ones? Or not, as it's to soon to call them stable? I think Tania said hers were generally small, that's why I ordered some from her even though I already had some.

Mine were not bagged btw.

Sorry, not a general offer at this point.

I grew one plant this summer and my fruits were like the
fruits on the left (larger size) in Tam's picture. My source
was wintersown seed. It was a good tomato.

The big ones are good, but I think the little ones are better.
