The seedling of mine that showed some purple on the stem is growing quite a bit more slowly than the other seedlings. Anyone else seeing something similar?

Plucked my one and only "Not Indian Stripe" F1. Nice coloring which I hope stands out in the photo. This fruit was set in the house before transplanting out the 1st week of June. No other fruit set but I do have some blossoms opening.
Sue B. Well, the fruit shows up kinda looking more brown/orangy when it is really more like the color of Cherokee Purple. Last edited by akgardengirl; July 11, 2012 at 02:53 AM. |

What generation of seed is producing the purple stem? I have the F1 seeds and I didn't have any purple stems. Are they the F2's that this is showing up in?

I inadvertently grew out the F1 last year - that produced the cross. The saved seed - which is what I sent out and everyone is growing - is F2. I sowed about 20 seeds - there was subtle stem color variation, with a few (just a few) showing up quite purple.
You got a nice result - Purple Smudge size/shape fruit with the Indian Stripe coloring!

So the results are in! I planted 3 of these.
Plant 1 - very green round golf ball sized fruit when unripe (no shoulder coloring - no purple smudges), ripened to pink - size in the 2 ounce range, firm flesh, nice sweet flavor, in the 7.5 range. Plant 2 - very green round to oblong (deep globe, taller than wide) unripe fruit (no shoulder coloring), ripened to pink - size up to 4-5 ounces, nice sweet flavor here as well - in the 7.5 range. Plant 3 (the one with the most purple on the young seedling stem) - small round to oblate fruit in the 2-4 ounce range, unripe fruit do have the purple dusting of color on the shoulder, which comes from the supposed Purple Smudge parent - but it colors up to purple, the color of Indian Stripe. Haven't tasted yet - this is my last tomato to ripen - very pretty. So just growing three plants, three very different results - none of them looked like the Purple Smudge parent at the unripe stage, but plant 1 is most like it once ripe. None looked like Indian Stripe. Plant 3 is the only one of the three to show attributes of both parents and would be fun to take forward to see what's next.

None of my plants produced fruit before going to the big tomato patch in the sky, alas!

Not Indian Stripe F2
Final harvest of these. They surprisingly did okay here in a cold summer where my cold varieties did not measure up. These are in different stages of ripeness. Sweet flavor with just a slight tang. Largest was 2.2 oz.

Here is my report finally.
I planted 3 seeds on March 26th 2012. I had 1 seed germinate . I grew the plant in a raised bed in the hoop house. It produced the first tomato on July 9th. I have had many tomatoes from this plant . It has a good flavor. Here are a couple of pictures of what I got from my plant. Thanks Craig for sharing your seed with me. Susan |
