For Those of You Who Live in the Front Range...
What are your favorite varieties? And what don't you like? We have a very different climate than most places, so what works well out east might not work so well with the elevation, intense sun, lack of humidity and temperature swings.
My favorites are: - Brandywine, Sudduth's Strain - Black Krim - Black Cherry Other very good ones are: - Indian Stripe - Dagma's Perfection - Tangella - Flamme - Little Lucky - Taxi - Green Zebra - Julia Child - Nikolayev Yellow Cherry - Koralik - Isis Candy - Ildi Two famous ones that I think are no good here are Brandywine (Pink) and Cherokee Purple. They ripen unevenly, are mealy and tasteless, yes tasteless. I grew them both twice because of their reputation, but had lousy results both years. What has worked (or not) for you? |

Funny, I live here too and I have no luck with any of the brandywines except maybe OTV. MY most reliable tomato is Cherokee purple.

Coloken - I highly recommend Brandywine, Sudduth's Strain. I have grown it for six years and it has been my best tomato each year. I tried Cowlick's brandywine this year and the resutls were decent. It did not measure up to the hype, but it was good enough to try again.
I know people who have had mixed results with cherokee purple here. It worked for some and not for others, including me. Give black krim a try if you have not yet. It is consistently just behind Sudduth's strain. |

Brandy wines do pretty well here, though Cowlicks did not do well at all in 2012. Sudduth's Strain was grown a year or two ago and I wasn't that impressed.
This year I liked Terhune for size and flavor, Aussie for the same though they are very late. I've done Aussie for many years as well as pink brandy. Don't really like cherry toms as they ripen too fast. |
