Default HELP with editing Tatiana's TOMATObase

Step 1. Create user account and member page.

To get started, you need to create a user account at Tatiana's TOMATObase.

If you plan to upload pictures, please email me to request Trusted User rights. Without that you will only be able to edit existing pages. If you plan to add your growout notes, you will need to request a member code from me by sending me your full name and the garden location (state or province only, I do not need your full address).

You can also ask for your member page at Tatiana's TOMATObase. The page will be very useful when you are posting your growout notes, as all the notes are posted with a member code. By clicking on your code, everybody can see your member page and figure out the location of the garden. The page will also be useful for you to see all the varieties with your notes or pictures.

Having your member page is optional, but I highly recommend to have it. You can leave it pretty much black, with an exception of your name and garden location.

Default Step 2. Preparing pictures for upload.

Step 2. Preparing pictures for upload.

All pictures should have file name conforming to the following format. This is important for ownership and variety identification.

VarietyName-YourName-DateTaken.jpg

If you do not have the date information, please put the year when the picture was taken.

File names can only contain English characters (no Unicode characters).

Files should not exceed 199KB in size. Otherwise the upload will fail.

[Optional] You can add a copyright to all your pictures before uploading.

[Optional] You may consider cropping your pictures to showcase your fruits - it is up to you.

There are various free programs you can use for resizing and putting a copyright note on your pictures - I recommend to use IfranView (http://www.irfanview.com/ ), it is free for non-commercial use, and it would be appropriate for editing pictures for TOMATObase.

Note: All the pictures that you are uploading should be your own work. You can also post pictures on someone's behalf, only if you have explicit permission (in writing) from the owner. Keep the permission for your records, as it need to be available upon request.

Default Uploading pictures to Tatiana's TOMATObase

You need to be logged in to perform any edits or uploads.

Option 1: Go to Special:Upload and follow the instructions on the page.
You can use 'Comments' text field to add your name, date taken, and any (optional) notes about how your photo is licensed/copyrighted to claim your ownership.

Once the picture is uploaded, it needs to be linked to a page where you want it to show up.

There are different ways to do it:
1. Open a variety page where the picture needs to be.
2. Open the page for editing.
3. Find an appropriate place to insert your picture -
- if there are no pictures on the page, just add it above all the member entries. If there are no member entries, add it above 'History' section. (A section always starts with "----" line.)
- if there are other pictures on the page, then find an appropriate place between the pictures. Pictures are usually listed in the following order: plant, leaf, flower, baby fruit, green fruit, ripe fruit, sliced fruit.

4. Insert the following line (of course your filename, variety name and date would vary):

5. If you want to have this variety to appear on your member page, add the following line to the bottom of the page:

For example:

6. Save the page.

If you are totally stuck, please can ask me to link them for you. Do not feel bad about it, as if you already uploaded everything with proper filenames, it is not a huge job for me to do, but it will may still be waiting in my upload queue, so it may not happen quickly.

Default Preparing your growout notes for posting.

Although you can always type in your notes directly, it is often easier to prepare them in advance. Especially when you would like to ask me to help to you post them.

I recommend to use any program that can edit plain text. Please avoid any formatting when you are preparing your notes - the formatting will not be retained by wiki, and will not show up correctly.

I use Notepad to do it.

Here is the format of your growout note:

----
member::YourMemberCode
: Your growout note/variety description

; Source : Your seed source (i.e. NY MA C 12 (Carolyn Male of Salem, New York))
Year: Year(s) when you grew it

Location: Your garden location

When you are putting this into the page, please do not forget to add you member code category line at the end of the page:

Wiki has its built-in spellcheck, so when you are adding your entries, please pay attention to all the highlighted words and correct them, if appropriate.

Please also end each sentence with '.', and avoid using abbreviations.

When you are preparing your notes for me to upload on your behalf, please put them all into the same text file and add Correct Variety Name before each entry. I'd recommend to check the name against the existing TOMATObase entries, as I may be using some import tools, and it is important to have the full match.

End each entry with this line to separate them:
----

Example:

Boondocks
member::IL LO N
: 80 days, indet., potato leaf foliage, 1-2 lb fruit, very good taste and yield.

; Source : NY MA C 94 (Carolyn Male of Latham, New York)
Year: 2006, 2009

Location: Oblong, Illinois

----

1884 Purple
....

----

etc

Default Creating a new page

Before you decide if there is a new page needed, please make sure that this variety does not yet exists at TOMATObase under an alternative name. You will be amazed how many different spellings exist for some varieties!

To do that, please enter a word from the name into the Search box and take a look at the search results. Sometimes you can find a variety already listed there.

If nothing is found, you can created a page.

You need to have 'Trusted User' rights to create a new page.

Steps:
1. Type the new variety name into the Search box. Please make sure that it is spelled correctly (yes, I made this mistake too often myself )

2. Click 'Go' button.

3. If the page does not already exist, you will see the 'Search results' page. that says 'There were no results matching the query.' After the rectangular grayish-bluish box, you will see this line in bold with a link:

Quote:
Create the page "name" on this wiki!
4. Click on the link and the editor will open an empty page for you to edit.

5. You can copy a page template from any other page for a similar variety, so you do not need to type all the Categories and the Info box again. If you are not sure which Categories to add, don’t add the ones in doubt, but please make sure that is always there (it is case-sensitive), so the newly entered tomato variety will show on the master tomato list.

6. Here is the Info box template that always gets added at the top of the page – please add it, and you can leave the values blank, if in doubt:
