The game is afoot! plowing and planting
I cleaned up about 2/3 of the garden by burning some brush (burning is the best way to deal with left over tomato debris), removing t-posts and wires from bean trellises, cleaning up trays and such, then plowing. I got an area about 150 X 120 ready to plant. The first row of potatoes is in the ground. I have French Fingerling, Azul Toro, Chellan, and 34 hills of mixed varieties. I hope to plant 3 more rows of potatoes tomorrow. This will include 2 rows of potato plants grown from seed. I will also put in some cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and some late peas. Late peas you say? Well, in this area, peas are planted the end of January. So this will be some "late" peas for this area. I am debating putting in a couple of rows of tomatoes just on the possibility they will make it. We are frost free in a month. DarJones

I finished up the evening by planting a row of TPS potato seedlings with about 200 plants in a 100 ft row. I want them to have a chance to show they can produce some potatoes. Then I planted a row of peas with about 70 ft of Mayfair and 30 ft of Dwarf Grey Sugar and finally a row of broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage.
I now have 5 rows planted in the garden, 3 are potatoes, 1 peas, and 1 brassicas. DarJones |

Heck, that's a lot of potatoes for one row! I'm curious, do you do many of each? Are there some you know you love and some new ones?
Congrats on a good nice start. |

Man Dar, that is a HUGE garden! You must have a big clear yard! And so many varieties...I'm just blown away....I've got to see pictures of this sometime. Wish I could get my game together--EARLY-- but me + early don't mix! Maybe next year, haha, yeah right!

Dar,
I admire you and wish you the best of luck with your garden. I can't imagine the amount of effort you are putting into your garden. I have been busting my tail with my "little" garden in comparison. I have also been working in our churches fifteen acre community garden and come home totally worn out. We have been planting almost the same crops as you but different varieties. The remarkable thing is we have many volunteers working on the community garden and it seems you accomplish the same thing working alone (please excuse the assumption if I am wrong). I didn't know a potato was named for Howie Mandel. By Commercial, do you mean the usual Russets in the stores?

Wow!! I cant wait to see pictures of all those varieties after you dig them up. And to see, and hear, how you cook them up!! LOl..I love potatoes..
We still have snow on the ground..Had a warm spell over the weekend, along with some rain. Melted some of the snow. But made for some very icy roads and yard..Back to more snow and cold today. |
