Some riding stables bed in straw, I'd think they could sell you some or know where to get it.

I noticed that Hummert sells it; they are near St Louis, but you could check other wholesale greenhouse supply companies in the Chicago area.

Thanks for all the PMs! You guys are the best. I found some in pretty close by. $4 per bale which is a little high but worth it because I didn't have to drive that far.
I found this state of Illinois website which was very helpful. http://www.agr.state.il.us/markets/h...?cat=4&de=6104 |

I was reading on Dow's site www.manurematters.com about herbicide contamination of horse manure. I have read that some farmers have gotten contamination from straw. I guess one could test it by sprouting a bean, as with manure?

I am pretty close to Chicago myself. I live in north west Indiana. You can get straw at live stock auctions if you are looking for quantity. I just get mine from local farmers. If you see a farm with a straw field stop in and ask if they have some for sale. You never know you might meet some really nice people and get a discount because they didn't have to take it to auction.

I go to the Feed Store. You can find it online but it's at Harlem Ave. and the Stevenson Expwy., on the southbound side. It's not that far from me.
