Sungold seedlings disappearing

Planted finally here on the north coast Friday night, my Sunglold plant was gone by Saturday morning. I planted my last one again, now gone also. Must be the smell of the plant, so no sungold cherry for me

You can't have too many backups. I've lost 13 large plants w/tomatoes on them to gophers so far this year. I expect to lose more. That's why I plant a minimum of 60 plants each season with at least 15 backups. It's a disgusting sight to walk out to the garden and see your four foot plant completely wilted, the stem severed at ground level. One year, they drug the whole plant underground so that only the unripe tomatoes sat on the ground surface because they couldn't fit down the hole.

Chipmunks did that to two of mine after I soil drenched with Jacks Bloom Buster. I wonder if the fertilizer somehow attracted them?

Sorry to hear. I think my husband would boycott the garden if I couldn't get at least one Sungold in there for him! I surround my beds in bird netting up to deter all the little "thieves". That may be a possible solution, but YMMV. Best of luck to you!

Cutworms is what gets me, every time! One of these years I'm going to remember to put a "collar" around them. Sorry about yours, what a shame!

Something is creeping around my garden, too. The barn cat was about to dispatch a chipmunk and I chased her off, poor chipmunk--yeah riiight! Never second guess a hunting cat--they know what they're doing. I've lost four plants and only have one Brandeva left (started with three).....where's that darn cat!

Carolyn posted that they just get under the collar. She also said that to do their thing they must wrap entirely around the stem, which is why they don't really bother larger thicker teamed plants. She said she would put a plastic drinking straw right up against her young plants, and thn they can't completely surround the stem, so can't cut! I thought that was brilliant, and super simple.

Lost 3 more of my 13 plants yesterday, so put new seedlings of Black Cherry in the garden.
