Another clue! Yesterday I went to throw out the trash in the dumpster directly behind my yard, and there lied an empty bottle of Vigoro Weed & Feed (active ingredient: 2,4-D (1.21%)). Maybe it was herbicide damage after all? Any way to shield plants from this going forward?

Sadly no, once the herbicide makes contact with the air the breeze will carry it all over the place Luckily there's a good chance your plants can grow out of the damage.
