Dwarf section in garden at the Eno Festival
I went to the Eno River Festival in Durham today. It's a fantastic festival, bands or entertainment on three separate stages all day, great food and craft vendors. We go almost every year.
Anyway, they have a small garden outside one of the buildings there. I almost skipped it, but decided to see if their tomatoes were faring okay with all of the rain we've had. Low and behold, there was an entire row of tomatoes from the Dwarf project! I don't remember all of the names, but Beryl Beauty, Dwarf Golden heart, and one with Adelaide in the name were there. I know there were at least eight or ten of them in one of the rows and they were all different varieties. The people who run a lot of the Eno projects pride themselves on being very nature friendly, recycling and being "green". So it was just kind of fun that someone there is apparently a Dwarf project fan and appreciates the unique advantages they offer. I was so excited, trying to explain the project to my cousin, and the rest of my family was just rolling their eyes at me like, "There she goes again, talking about some weird tomatoes!" Know the feeling. My wife cautions people when they ask about tomatoes. She knows they will hear more than they ever bargained for.

Part of what makes me laugh is that they seem to think I'M obsessed, with my thirty plants and thirteen varieties.
Compared to many on this site, I'm barely dipping my toes in the water of the tomato gene pool! |

I apologized to my husband the other day for my "crazy backyard farm". He laughed and told me he loved both me AND my crazy backyard farming! Made me feel better about the container ghetto I've got going.
I learned a long time ago to offer just enough information that people know I have a passion for a subject. That way they can inquire further if interested. Also, "oh, that's nice" and "um hm" do not constitute further inquiry. It is so neat to see large projects utilizing the Dwarfs! I was surprised when I started researching tomatoes this year and discovered so many small varieties, old and new. |
