Crissyb,
Your comment about Jaune Flammee is a bit surprising to me as I always thought it was a bit too bitey for me compared to Sun Gold or Orange Pixie. But that may be because of the odd weather we've had here in Wisconsin this year. Other varieties I grow that are favs, don't seem to have a whole lot of flavor so far this year. I think the up and down temps, mostly down, have meant less flavor so far. I know it has meant less ripe tomatoes for sure. There are so few field grown tomatoes so far at the Madison farmers market it's really strange. Usually by now the market is flooded with tomatoes. Carol |

I'd have to say the same about Flamme. Maybe it's all the rain we've had but mine are blah flavor. Pretty to look at but pretty boring tasting, too.

Well then I will have to grow Jaune Flammee next year to see. There just seemed something off about the flavor to me, a weird taste, maybe that was what I didn't like about it was too much of a bite? I had read such good reviews about it too. I will keep trying them though to see if it was just the earlier ones, the rest I put into a tomato sauce. I am worried at how cool the nights are here in wisconsin, that could mean an early frost and I haven't harvested any of my big tomatoes yet! Such an unusual year! I love sungold, its my first year growing it and I wish I had planted several plants, I bet it would make a fabulous tomato jam! |

I have been growing Burpee Forth of July Indeterminant for several years. Always have tomatoes by that date, a good producer with few problems, still producing I get about 8 vine ripe a week from one plant, very sweet and a little tart.

My favorite golf ball or saladette variety has been Fourth Of July hybrid for many years. It has been early and consistent every year I've grown it. Since it is a hybrid, I typically purchase my plants from nurseries in the spring. This year, many nurseries had difficulty obtaining enough seed from Burpee to satisfy demand. I grew Moravsky Div. this year along with Fourth Of July and think I will probably replace FOJ in future gardens with MD. MD is a better tasting open pollinated variety which produces as early as FOJ and also continues producing through the summer. Ted |
