Have you ever seen this?
I have been getting a lot of tomatoes this year that look like this.
They are Celebrity. I didn't have any like this last year. I put some egg shells in the holes of some of the plants when I planted but sure if I did it to these. Maybe that's the cause. Just wondering.

High sustained heat can cause nipples at the blossom end. Grow the same variety the next year and no nipples. It just depends on the weather in any one season and also the stage of developmentof the fruits..
Carolyn, who notes that some have found those nipples and said whoa,I've got a heart variety, which was wrong.

A couple weeks ago we had some weather in upper 90s but seems to me its been in the upper 80s for the last couple weeks. I just looked it up for July the hottest was 98, One day. and the average was 86 per day and for the month as a whole it was 78. Not doubting your knowledge Carolyn, I will believe you. Thanks

I believe it takes quite a while for egg shells to really break down

Ah, so THAT explains it! I am growing a Lemon Boy variety and the first fruit to ripen on it has a pronounced nipple, like that of a lemon. I figured that in addition to the lemon color that this also contributed to the name. But then, after the heat wave we experienced the other tomatoes haven't produced the same shape. Mystery solved. Thanks!
