Carolyn, I thought for sure that story was going to follow on like Bill Murray in Caddyshack, and that Charlie blew up the farmland to smithereens. Sounds like the damage was pretty well contained, thankfully.
I like that idea of spraying hot pepper oil on the tomatoes. Let 'em get a few licks of that stuff and they'll be reticent to return.

The Roenator
This system looks like a brain child of the famous "ACME" Corporation, except that it actually works as designed, when used in accordance with the directions. But just like Charlie's method, you better be sure you know where ALL of the burrow exits are. http://www.rodenator.com/ Jim |

From the Rodenator website:
"All three models can and do work under the same principles of delivering a precisely measured mixture of propane and oxygen into the tunnel or burrow of invasive pests. This mixture is then either manually or remotely detonated by the operator, causing an instantaneous underground shockwave of concussive force that eliminates the targeted pest and in some cases (species specific) collapses the existing tunnel structure thus preventing immediate reinfestation." Why not just say, "Dude, buy this thing because it BLOWS STUFF UP!" I don't know a man alive who wouldn't want one of these. Heck, I know a few who would probably breed burrowing critters in secret and infest their own yard, just to give their wife an excuse to buy one. Then they would take turns going from one buddy's house to the next, just blowing up their yards. |

The first thing that any self-respecting, male, Rodenator owning hobbyist would do is drive over to his buddy’s house with the Rodenator and a suitable quantity of beer and proudly proclaim, “Hey, y’all, wanna see sump’in cool?” Only after collapsing his entire yard, or setting fire to various outbuildings, would they then jump back in the car, get more beer, and continue on to the next Your perception of male logic and the entertainment value of this fine instrument is entirely too narrow. For the life of me, I can’t understand why the Rodenator website doesn’t have a better Merchandising page. I’m picturing T-Shirts emblazoned with “Hey Y’All, Watch This”. |

I need more beer.
Then maybe I can decide whether this yard blower upper thingy is worth a squint. First more beer. fyi, I don't drink alcohol of any sort, just playing along with the male stereotype. |

Here is a scenario to think about.
The gas somehow gets into the house or the septic system and you blow up the place. Another is rocks being hurled. The video shows small tunnels but what if it went into a large hole under a flat rock. Here is what happens when you cross a redneck with dangerous toys. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ABGIJwiGBc Worth |

Douglas, I do apologize for my narrow minded, mean spirited, condescending ways! What was I thinking, forgetting the alcohol?
I absolutely concur! Blowing stuff up just isn't any fun without a little liquid refreshment. (It also helps deaden the pain of any cuts, scrapes, burns, protruding organs or detached limbs that may occur during such blowing up of things.) Now hand me one of those beers. Me and the girls are going a safe distance across the street so we can laugh at you guys while you destroy the neighborhood! (And, just in case, we already have 911 on speed dial!) |

Drinking while handling explosive materials is very foolish. If you're not very careful, you could spill some!
Hence the expression "Hey, hold my beer and watch this!" Last edited by Got Worms?; October 4, 2013 at 09:58 AM. |

So, the way I see it, your problem is not how to catch the woodchuck (ground hog), but how to dispatch the same without an adequate drowning vessel. Taking life away is easy, it's trying to maintain it that's hard.
I ran a trap line back when times were not so good. And, I can tell you that the most humane ways involve asphyxiation. If you cannot drown them, you can throw a tarp over the trap and use a piece of flexible exhaust pipe to pump carbon monoxide from a vehicle under it. Try not to melt the tarp. Or, you can put the trap alongside a running lawnmower and throw a tarp over both. The tarp needs to be large enough to seal the tarp edge to the ground with maybe 2" x 4" s or some such as weights. I have not addressed what is legal and what is not. Laws concerning wildlife are addressed by the state in which you live. Animals caught in leg hold traps are done differently, but still asphyxiated. |

I discovered that a large plastic storage tote is deep enough and long enough to hold the large trap needed for a groundhog. You can't fill it with water for long because the sides are not strong and bow out with water weight. Now all I need to do is find a bait more attractive than all the ripe tomatoes on the vines.

Don't know if this actually works or not, but I remember my elderly neighbor having trouble with muskrats damming up her creek.
She put out chocolate E-lax candies in the area and they left. She said it didn't kill them, but it made them sick and they would decide it wasn't a safe place anymore. Honestly sounds odd to me, but she swore by it. Don't know if groundhogs would be similar, but it might be worth a try. Update: Okay, went to look up the Ex-lax thing. Turns out that it actually kills the animals. IT IS ALSO DANGEROUS TO DOGS! It may not kill them, but it can make them really sick. (And can cause a HUGE mess if it starts working while they are in the house!) So it is recommended that if you do use it, to put it into the burrows and keep your animals away from the area. Thinking that I may treat the voles in my yard (who reproduce at an absolutely astonishing rate) to a little "candy" party. It won't get rid of all of them, but hopefully it might knock the population back for a while. Last edited by livinonfaith; October 5, 2013 at 01:12 PM. |
