Default Momotaro vs Eva Purple Ball

Since I was in search of the perfect sweet pink tomato, I thought that Momotaro (F1) would be fantastic.

Today, we tried our first Momotaro and our first Eva Purple Ball and both were very tasty. What a surprise that we couldn't tell the difference in taste between the two!!!!!

I have grown Momotaro and I like it. Can´t say it was real taste standout, I mean there are so many great tasting tomatoes. Well worth growing though

I can not decide for next year between Koroleva and Rose de Berne. Somewhat similar to me in taste although Koroleva is earlier and slightly larger. It gets hard when you like so many varieties to and there is plenty to choose from.

Lindalana,

Did Rose de Berne have any BER for you? I loved it last year (both for size and taste), and should really try it against Eva (Purple Ball) and Anna (Russian).

Linda, I hope you aren't making decisions on what to grow just based on whether or not a variety can have BER/

Almost any variety I've grown, many thousands as you know, can have BER in a given season, since no two seasons are the same.

That's just speaking for me, but I know that growing conditions are different in anyones garden, from year to year, and that means everywhere, not just me in the NE, it means in any country.

http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/R...b=General_Info

This variety may have come to the US via the huge trade that four of us did with Norbert in France in 1992 but I don't have time to look in my wayback SSE YEarbooks to check that out.

Yes, I've grown it, but don't have my data books from that far back, but if it was a BER magnent, I think I'd remember that.

There's also a Rose de Lucerne, but I never grew that one.

Taste-wise for me of the three you mentioned above, it would be Anna, Eva and then Rose, but they weren't all grown in the same season, so who knows.

Carolyn, where it feels like Fall here, high today about 65-70 F and predicted low around 47 . Same temps predicted for the next few days as well.

I've tried both Momotaro and Eva Purple Ball. Both were tasty with Momotaro being more productive, however Pale Perfect Purple IMO is far superior to both of them in taste and productivity. PPP is the most productive Tomato I have ever grown.

Carolyn,

I wouldn't mind too much about BER if it was just a little. I have some this year and I don't even know or care which plant it is on because it's not on every tomato as it was last year on the Rose de Bern plants. Thanks for the Anna, Eva and Rose ranking . I really love Anna because she is so beautiful!

Just had a Fish Lake Oxheart for lunch and I think I am in love. It was a biggie, so we didn't compare it with anything else though.

Jim,

Thanks for the Pale Perfect Purple recommendation. That is on my list for next year! Productive AND tasty - sounds like a winner!

Pale PerfectPurple I think should be grown much more often and I hope that happens/

As you can see from the link below I included it in my tomato book and I had many to choose from.

Note that it was bred by Tad Smith, that's Dr. Tad Smith, who both Craig and I knew well and he used to beed some F1's for us as well, and there are others he bred , OP's, that are also listed here and there.

Some of you may rememember that Lucky Cross appeared in Craig's garden due to a variety called TAD. Yes, that Tad. He had sent me a 3 way cross, described what he was looking for and said I had a 1/64 chance of getting it, I put out 12 plants and was lucky enough to get it ASAP/

This is all described in the link below which Craig wrote for Tania

There have been quite a few striped ones that have come from working with selections from that Brandywine X Tad cross. Lee's
latest one being Don's Double Delight, which I offered in my seed offer.

http://t.tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/Lucky_Cross

Tad's degree is in plant breeding, he first crawled on his knees in GA peanut fields assessing selections, and then was head of the Potato Blight section of a place in PA, a well know firm, actually, and last I remember he's on the west coast with another firm now, I have the link where someone contacted his mother and she gave the info.

Summary; Will someone please grow Pale Perfect Purple?

Carolyn

Linda, nope, not a single BER problem on Rose. Carolyn, thanks for advice! I love most of tomatoes so making choices is hard....
Yeah, Fish Lake is on the list for next year, I am just hoping it is not very late tomato

Carolyn,

I'm definitely going to grow Pale Perfect Purple next year. Just have to get some seed!

Lindalena,

So glad that you didn't get BER on Rose de Berne!

Fish Lake Oxheart is said to be early. Mine wasn't, but the poor thing had a rough life. I managed to break the top off it shortly after I planted it out, then its neighbor, Green Zebra cherry, took over a ton of space and light. Next year I will give it better accommodation!
