Yeah - I would think plastic would be good for melons (rotting) - My garden area is full sun - that plastic would get SUPER HOT !
Thats why I was just thinking spring warm up then off it goes ~ Tom

It looks like I will be using landscape fabric for my melons this year. I had considered sheets of black plastic used mostly for weed control. It seems that there are too many drawbacks, i.e. heat, inability for rainwater to get to the plants, etc. Good thread so I can get my plans made early.
