Default Recommended varieties

Lists, lists, everywhere! I was trying to tidy up when I found this one written on the back of an envelope. I'm pretty sure it was a list of tomatoes recommended by Craig LeHouillier in his recent radio interview. The thing is, I didn't write down WHY these varieties were recommended, although they all look good to me:

Aker's W. Virginia
Amish Paste
Anna Russian
Cherokee Purple
Dr. Lyle
Druzba
Earl of Edgecombe
Eva Purple Ball
Mule Team
Reisentraube
Sandul Moldovan
Sophie's Choice
Stupice
Stump of the World

Does it ring any bells with anyone?

Linda

Why don't you PM Craig? I'm sure there probably is an archive of the radio show also.

It doesn't ring any bells as to why they are grouped together. But, to me, it is a dated list. If I were to guess, from about the year 2000 +/- five years.

On a side note, observing wish lists and send in lists to the MMMM swap, several of those varieties simply don't show up anymore. The trend seems to be wanting the newest blue, or striped, or Dwarf Project, or far away find.

Once I find time, I think I'll go through Tatiana's Tomatobase to find all those oldies but goodies.

I think they are all in Carolyns book, except maybe Stump and Reisentraube?

Bingo Linda! You got it! It's a list of varieties that I have from Carolyn's book! (Plus Stump). All oldies and goodies!

Thank you

Now where did I put that list that Craig recommended on that podcast......?

Linda

Here's what it says on the fb page of the radio show.
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ameri.../123495234074?

"Craig the tomato man says that his favorite tomatoes are Lucky Cross, Suddeth's strain of Brandywine, Green Giant, Lillian's Yellow, Sungold and Cherokee Purple"

Here's the tomatoville thread with links to the radio show and fb page.

Aker's WV ; Eva Purpke Ball; Cherokee Purple
are all very good for me and are in my garden every year.
Dr Lyle was unimpressive for me.
I'm trying Stump o' World this year myself

Mark,

I've grown EPB and CP. Last year I tried Indian Stripe because it is supposed to be more productive than CP, and I was happy with that.

I'll probably try Stump this year as I hear great things about it. Thanks for your comment about Dr. Lyle. I was all set to try that one, but maybe not now.

I grew Dr Lyle last year and it was just ok, at best. At the bottom of the list for a year of otherwise great tomatoes.

Thanks Chapin!

There are still so many GREAT varieties that I haven't tried yet, so I don't want to waste time growing the mediocre ones!
