Planting Tomatoes with Sugarcane?
I have been looking for some sugarcane to grow (heirloom types like Blue Ribbon) because my grandparents used to grow it and chew on it for the juice. And it looks like I may be getting some for starts.
My question is can I grow tomatoes with the sugarcane and let them climb up the sugarcane stalks. I understand that the sugarcane stalks are stronger than corn stalks (please correct if that is wrong) but would the root systems be compatable for growing together? Thanks |

Not likely. You would have to space things out too far to be effective. Cane grows 8 to 10 feet tall. This would shade the tomatoes significantly. The tomatoes would tend to overrun the cane when it was young.
There are lots of crops that can be interplanted with tomatoes but very few of them qualify as companion plants. The best I've done is to grow tomatoes with onions. I stake the tomatoes and the onions are just for green onions early in the season. Fusion |

I agree with fussion, I grow sugar cane and it is a grass. in a single clump it will be 8ft high and spread out 6-ft or more depending on the number of canes requires a lot of water to do well and would over come anything planted too close.

I haven't grown any sugarcane before. Between the shading and watering of the sugarcane - not good for tomato plants - to much shade and would over water the tomato plants.
