Sure it is fishy! Look at the AKA - also known as Shah or White Mikado! This is just BS, proliferated by the followers of a well known author who insists that White Queen was a Livingston variety and that Shah is a smallish pale yellow/white tomato. (Shah was actually a large, golden colored tomato that we would probably recognize as similar to the Yellow Brandywine/Aunt Gertie's Gold/Elbe types). Shah was released briefly by Henderson in the late 1880's and was likely not stable, as it vanished from catalogs within a few years.
This tomato is likely Potato Leaf White, which has been an SSE listed variety for many years.

I'm sitting here laughing Craig b'c when I saw that White Brandywine I knew exactly what was up and I started getting ticked off, once again.
But thank heavens you beat me to the punch and exposed Shah/Mikado White for being extinct, and all the rest. That author to whom you refer has resurrected so many varieties from the dead that perhaps he should be referred to as the Lazarus of extinct varieties. Carolyn, who just finished watching a fascinating Nova program on who and when humans came to this continent.

I completely just watched the same program! the Tx stream valley people with the nuts and fruits had it made!
they did a nice job of briefly describing variance and heritibility of mitochondrial DNA, IMHO.. About the Ebay- looks like he totally scanned the SSE public catalog seed. Google Image has the same pic and Qiyanai-Huang Tomato from SolanaSeeds I know, lots of people rip photos on Ebay, youre not selling the actual photo, but yuck. |

Sure glad I ordered my Boar seeds from Brad. Did you notice the price for 4 seeds? Can't believe he will sell any. Jay

**** Jay, they'll sell, they'll sell. I refuse to even go to e-bay to look at the offerings b'c so many of them are so ridiculous. But there are lots of folks who think that's the only place that they can get heirloom varieties. Triple Sigh. What really bothered me a couple of years ago was someone who pictured tomatoes with shall we say "interesting" protuberences and the implication was that if you bought the seeds that the tomatoes you raised would look the same. Ridiculous.

Here is another good one -
http://cgi.ebay.com/HEIRLOOM-LIVINGS...QQcmdZViewItem "Livingston's White Queen"...only problem is that Livingston never released a white tomato. Unfortunately, this is an error that continues to this day in the Baker Creek catalog (despite several attempts to have it corrected). In 1882, Livingston released Golden Queen. They never released a white variety. (and White Queen, which Carolyn and I got out of the USDA, is not a 2 pound tomato...)

Carolyn and Craig thanks for sharing your wealth of information again. I also saw Shah/White Mikado listed at Underwood Gardens. Seems like several have it listed. After reading the information on TV don't have any desire to try it. Jay

Talking of odd things on e-bay,did any of you see that scam for the (Big Zac tomato seed,
A chap from spain claims that his variety (Big Zag) has been grown in the Andalucian mountains area by all the locals for decades, the photo he puts up is the same one that the original big zac was displayed with using the tomato set on top of a set of scales. Another scam- was a chap in the uk offering a set of three types of tomatoes side by side in a sectioned plastic tray, these same tomatoes are on sale every day at Tesco's Supermarket as a salad selection for every day use, Its absolutly amazing what some people will offer on e-bay, but I did rather smile at the Big Zac-Big Zag theory of being and andalucian local grown heirloom. |

***** Michael do you perhaps mean the Variety Delicious here instead of Big Zac? Gordon Graham of Oklahoma, now deceased, still has the record size for Delicious and that one has been shown over and over sitting atop a scale, but I've never seen Big Zac pictures with a fruit on a scale.

Thanks Dunkel, for while I have the TT catalog I must confess that I don't look at it very carefully.
But I've seen scads of pictures of the Delicious one on a scale, and actually it's a replica that was made, not the real fruit.
