Default Usefulness of controlled studies

Edit: Oops! I didn't see there was more than one page to this thread, and I thought I was the first reply otherwise I wouldn't have posted this. Sorry about that. I guess this didn't need re-saying.

I agree that a carefully controlled study is one of the best ways to get to the bottom of things. However, I personally always trust first hand experience over a study that has been funded by who knows whom? The thing is, while science is great, it is only as great as the methods, coupled with assumptions, bias, and intentions of the scientist. Studies are great, but if they contradict what works in practice... then good science begins to investigate what is working, right?

A good scientist I know cautions his medical students "in your future work experience, if you see over time something not working "that studies say does," or something is working that "studies show can't," then you should follow your consistent personal experience."
