Pruning Rampant vines
I grew "Jasper" for the first time ever. I must say this is one vigorous tomato! It is threatening to take over the city of Ann Arbor. I would really like to prune it away from the other toms and eggplants, but I want to do it in an organized fashion so the plant is not fatally injured. How should I go about this? It is in a six foot cage.

Perhaps you should've done it earlier.
But, as the season is approaching towards its end, you can prune /top new growth WHEN there is about 40 days or less til your First Frost Date (FFD). The logic is that any blossoms/buds appearing from there on will have NO chance to turn into ripe fruits. It take (in average ) 50 days from bud to ripe fruit or something with color break. This number can be bigger at the end of season when the weather gets cooler, the days shorter. Gardeneer |
